Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was an infant. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art as well as theatre. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example that art can be an instrument for activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. When she was studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the trash from one of juries. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
